Smithsonian Affiliations Program

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History is one of only four Smithsonian Affiliations members in Georgia. After undergoing a rigorous application process and sending several delegates to Washington, DC to meet with Smithsonian representatives, the Museum was awarded the honor of becoming a Smithsonian Affiliations Program member.

The Museum's extensive Glover Steam Locomotive Collection, its unique look at the role of railroads in the Civil War, and ample temporary exhibit space all contributed to its acceptance into the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program.

As a member of the program, the Southern Museum will have the opportunity to incorporate artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution's collections, such as Civil War or transportation relics, into its own exhibits. The Museum will also host exhibits from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES).

Membership in the Smithsonian Affiliations Program also allows the Museum access to Smithsonian historians who will give periodic lectures on topics ranging from the Civil War to the history of railroads. Finally, those who become members of the Southern Museum can also become a member of the Smithsonian Institution; ask for details at the information desk in the museum or click here for more information on memberships.
